What is a Colposcopy?
A colposcope is an optical instrument with a light that magnifies images.
Colposcopy is performed as a screening method by a trained gynecologist, where the vulva, vagina, and cervix are evaluated and observed, with the intention of identifying preinvasive lesions or cervical cancer.
A gynecologist trained in colposcopy, ideally a gynecologic oncologist, is the best and most qualified specialist for the detection of malignant lesions and can offer and provide treatment if necessary.
Colposcopy should be performed at any time. It is recommended after age 25, once sexual activity has begun, or one year after becoming sexually active, especially if the patient has abnormal Pap smear results to identify the lesion.
The procedure is performed in a colposcopy clinic within a doctor's office and takes approximately 10 minutes. With the patient in the gynecological position on the bed, the specialist gently places the vaginal speculum; the colposcope is then placed a short distance from the vulva and illuminated with light. Once the cervix has been visualized, saline solution and a green filter are applied through the colposcopy, without identifying any abnormal blood vessels. Acetic acid and Lugol's solution (made with iodine) are then applied to identify any lesions in the cervix, vagina, and/or vulva.
What is the difference between colposcopy and pap smear?
A Pap smear is a sample taken from the cervix and sent to pathology to identify any abnormalities or early cell changes that could cause malignant lesions that could develop into cervical cancer.
A colposcopy is used to detect an existing lesion on the cervix, whether malignant or benign.
It is very important to emphasize that no single test replaces the other; they are complementary and are recommended as a routine checkup at least once a year.
What are the indications for performing a colposcopy study?
- Normal hygiene
- Do not use suppositories, intimate soaps, or vaginal creams for at least 3 days prior to the study.
- Do not have your menstrual period for at least 3 days or 3 days before it begins (this can be any day of your cycle when you are not bleeding).
- Do not have sexual intercourse for at least 3 nights prior to the study.
What happens if there is any alteration in the study?
After identifying a lesion on the cervix by colposcopy, the patient is informed, and if necessary, a biopsy may be taken and sent to a pathologist to corroborate the diagnosis of the lesion found and provide appropriate treatment for the patient's current condition.
